Speech Title: Correlation of Design/Fabrication and Measurements for the Silicon Waveguide Optical Switches I
Biography: Degui Sun is a Professor of Changchun University of Science and Technology (CUST), China, and a Visiting Professor at the University of Ottawa, Canada, an IEEE Member. He received his B.S. degree in 1985 from the Harbin Institute of Technology, China, and in 1988 and 1993 he respectively earned his Master and Ph.D degrees from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) at Changchun Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (CIOM). From August 1994 to March 1998, he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Microelectronics Research Centre, University of Texas at Austin, USA, where he started his research on optical waveguide based EO switches and modulators. From April 1998 to December 2001, he ever worked in an Ottawa-based start-up, the Nu-Wave Photonics for developing the products of positive integrated optic communication components; from January 2002 to July 2003, he was a Research Associate and Group Leader at the Faculty of Engineering, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, USA; and from 2003 to end of 2006 he executed his “100-Talent-Plan” Project of the CAS entitled by “research on advanced components for optical communications” at Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP). Since 2008, in Centre for Research in Photonics at uOttawa, he had ever been appointed as the Project Director and the Chief Scientist of a start-up company– D&T Photonics (DTP) spun-off from uOttawa to execute research on photonic integrated circuit (PIC) high-speed switching devices on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguide platform.
His major interests include silicon micro-/nanoscale optoelectronic integrated switching devices/modules and the fabrication techniques and quality metrology of silicon/silica waveguide on the large-scale wafers for optical communications networks; the dielectric properties of BaTiO3 crystal thin-film waveguide and the high bandwidth electro-optic (EO) modulators for the next generation (5G) high-speed high-capacity communications systems. Since 2009, he has published some 20 papers in SCI indexed and erudite journals, more than 20 articles in conference proceedings including invited speeches a chapter in a book, he ever awarded 1 US patent and 1 China patent, issued 5 China patents.
Abstract: In this work, the performance specifications of the photonic switches for the modern optical communications and sensors are analyzed, then the limitations of three types of the optical switches: the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) type, the waveguide corner mirror (WCM) and the plasmonic waveguide field effect transistor (PWFET) optical switches are investigated and analyzed, where the MZI type optical switch is based on the optical interference of two split guided-modes, WCM type switch is based on the Goos-Hänchen (GH) shift of a reflected guided-mode and the PWFET optical switch is based on the optical phase transition of highly confined guided-mode at a dielectric-metal interface of an optoelectronic device. So, all these integrated optical switches are going to the micro-nanoscale in the p-n junction. The design/fabrication of all these optical switches is completed on the CMOS standard platform. Despite each sort of optical switches has been made to have prestigious progress and even has shown the indispensable roles in applications in the modern photonic information systems, and the high quality design/fabrication and the advanced metrologies have also been developed to meet some requirements of applications, not much researches and developments are dedicated to the correlations of all these three processes. Thus, in this speech, the dependences of the central performances specifications of these three devices on the three key processes: design, fabrication and measurement on the modern silicon-on-insulator (SOI) are broadly investigated to promote the compatibility and mutual enhancements of the three necessary processes. As a result, the theoretical models for defining the correlations of three processes are built with the combination of performance, optical moss, and the consistent results for the three type optical switches are proved, leading to the powerful guidance for research, development and production of any type optical switches.
